Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) – MAIN
The JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination – Main) is a national-level entrance exam in India, primarily for admission to undergraduate engineering programs (B.E./B.Tech) and architecture programs (B.Arch/B.Planning). Here’s a breakdown of what colleges it provides entrance to, along with the exam pattern details:
Entrance for Colleges
- NITs (National Institutes of Technology)
- IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology)
- GFTIs (Government-Funded Technical Institutions)
Additionally, JEE Main serves as a qualifying examination for the JEE Advanced, which is the entrance test for the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology).
Exam Pattern
Starting from 2/11/24, the JEE Main exam has a new pattern with no choices, consisting of 75 questions.
The JEE Main exam has three main sections for B.E./B.Tech aspirants:
- Physics: 25 questions
- Chemistry: 25 questions
- Mathematics: 25 questions
Each section generally includes 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and 5 numerical value questions, all of which need to be answered under the new pattern.
1. Structure of the Exam
- Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- Total Questions: 75 questions (25 per subject).
- Type of Questions:
- 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) per subject.
- 5 numerical value-type questions per subject.
2. Key Features
- No Choice: All questions are compulsory. Previously, candidates had some
internal choices in numerical value-type questions; this has been removed.
- Marking Scheme:

Admission to colleges through JEE Main
Admission to colleges through JEE Main is primarily for undergraduate engineering
programs (B.E./B.Tech) in NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, and several other participating
institutions. Below are the details of college types, eligibility, and the number of
seats:
1. Types of Institutions
1.1 National Institutes of Technology (NITs)
- Number of NITs: 31
- Total Seats: ~23,994 (for B.Tech)
- Seat Allocation: 50% Home State Quota, 50% Other State Quota
1.2 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)
- Number of IIITs: 26
- Total Seats: ~7,000
1.3 Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs)
- Number of CFTIs: ~28 (including IIEST, School of Planning and Architecture, and
others)
- Total Seats: ~6,500
1.4 State Government & Private Colleges
- Many state government colleges and private universities accept JEE Main scores
for admission.
- Example States: Maharashtra, Odisha, Haryana, Rajasthan, etc.
1.5 Special Institutions
- Institutes like IIEST Shibpur: Admission through JEE Main.
- Some deemed universities and colleges like Amity University, Sharda University,
and LPU also accept JEE Main scores.
2. Seat Reservation
- General: 50.5%
- EWS: 10%
- OBC-NCL: 27%
- SC: 15%
- ST: 7.5%
- PwD (Across Categories): 5% horizontal reservation.
3. Eligibility for Admission
- Qualifying Exam: Class 12 or equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry, and
Mathematics as core subjects.
- Minimum Marks: At least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) for NITs, IIITs, and
CFTIs. This criterion was relaxed in recent years due to COVID-19 but should be
confirmed annually.
